FAQ

Question:  How long will I need to leave my laptop or computer in the shop?

Answer:  Depends on the problem.  We fix some things on the spot.  Virus removal may require up to a few days depending on severity.

Question:  Do you do remote support?

Answer:  Yes we do.  Minor problems are often corrected in a short remote session.  However virus infection may require a trip to the shop.

Question:  What is the best antivirus protection?

Answer:  We get this question more than any other.  There's no good answer.   No particular brand will completely protect you.  Safe computing is the best protection along with a name brand antivirus program.  We sell and recommend AVG.  It seems to give adequate protection and doesn't slow down your computer as bad as some other brands.  However, we will install any antivirus protection software you want.  Just make sure you have something and keep it up to date.

Question:  My brother-in-law told me I needed more memory because my computer is slow.   Should I add more memory?

Answer:  If you have a fairly new laptop or computer you may not need more memory.  The new computers being sold lately have plenty of memory.  You may have another problem that needs checking.  If you have an older system, lets say a system that is running Windows Vista chances are you could use some memory.  The early systems that shipped with Vista were underpowered.  Additional memory can make a significant difference in performance on Windows Vista systems.  If you have a much older computer running Windows XP you may not get a significant jump in performance by adding memory.  If your XP machine is really dragging then it might be time to have it checked or consider upgrading to a new computer.

Question:  Is it better to let my computer run all the time or to turn it off at night?

Answer:  There's no single right answer.  Depends on how you use it.  Some think it stresses the components to turn off and on all the time.  Studies have been done that say you save a little money on your electricitiy bill if you turn it off at night.  So, do what you want.  Personally, I leave mine on all the time.  That way I don't have to wait on the computer to boot up when I sit down with my morning coffee.

Question:  Do you sell laptop power adapters?

Answer:  Yes, we sell laptop power adapters and batteries too.  We keep most power adapters in stock.  We do not sell the knock off or counterfeit adapters that you can get on Ebay.  We sell only branded orginial equipment.

Question:  I have heard that social networking such as Facebook is a good way to get a computer a virus.

Answer:  You are not likely to get a virus directly from Facebook.  They have controls in place to prevent this.  However Facebook has had some well publisized problems with hijacked user accounts.  In other words some 16 year old kid in Romania has guessed the password of one of your friends and is now masqurading as your friend.  They may intice you to click on something and you can get a virus that way.   Make sure you know your friends and limit the number to people in your group to those you can trust and not invite in friends of friends.
